ACTION

Norway, in the depths of winter 1987. An isolated wooden house above a snow-swept fjord village becomes the stage for a breathless, psychological chamber drama that is far more than the story of an aging man. It is the inner turmoil of an outcast and a subtle thriller about the deadly depths of religious power.

At the heart of the story is Einar Kristiansen. Bitter, sharp-tongued, and systematically isolated from his village community, he fights with his last ounce of strength against his impending legal guardianship. After the sudden death of his wife, Mona, the state and the church community want to strip him of his autonomy and forcibly relocate him to the "Lazarus Home." But Einar's resistance is rooted far deeper than mere stubbornness or the fear of losing his home. It is the scarred product of decades of being forced to live a double life.

His homosexuality—an unspeakable and dangerous taboo in the relentlessly conservative, devoutly religious confines of rural Norway—had increasingly eroded him from within. To escape total social ostracism, he once fled into a lifelong, cold lie at Mona's side. This brutal denial of his true identity not only forced him into the role of a suspiciously regarded and hated outsider, but also drove him into emotional numbness, illness, and ultimately, a devastating catastrophe.

When the young, devout Tom Berendsen arrives on behalf of the community to "look after" Einar and prepare him for the move, a merciless rhetorical duel erupts in the oppressive, icy-cold kitchen. Two completely irreconcilable worlds collide: the raw, pain-sharpened sarcasm of a man to whom life has denied everything, and the naive, clichéd faith of a young man who refuses to acknowledge the dark cracks in his own pious ideology.

As the snow relentlessly encases the house and the psychological tension between the men rises, a sinister thriller unfolds in the background, lending the play a completely new, menacing dimension. Mona's death in the icy river water suddenly no longer appears as merely a tragic accident. From hastily rummaged drawers, old papers, and unspoken hints, a disturbing puzzle begins to take shape. Had Mona uncovered a monstrous secret shortly before her death? Was she about to shake the pious foundations of the community?

From the shadows of the past inevitably emerges the invisible but all-powerful figure of Pastor Birch. The deeper the investigation delves into the abyss of village intrigues, the more pressing and dangerous the question becomes: who is actually playing the role of the devil in this God-fearing valley, and what methods will a cornered power-hungry individual stop at?

“Heroes” combines the tragedy of an identity suppressed by society with a highly suspenseful criminal case that leads deep into a labyrinth of pent-up guilt, merciless betrayal and religious delusion.
