ACTION
Jeppe, a drunken farmer battered by life and his quick-witted wife, sleeps off his intoxication on the dung heap. When he awakens, he can hardly believe his eyes: He's lying in a bed of gold silk, surrounded by servants, the finest food, and an eccentric baroness who addresses him reverently as "Gracious Sir." Has Jeppe landed in paradise? Has he switched sides—or is it all just a cruel game orchestrated by the bored elite?
"Jeppe in Paradise" is a contemporary adaptation of this old comedy. It liberates the classic story from the moralizing instruction of the 18th century and transforms it into a timeless parable about humanity's longing for escape from an unbearable reality. The play offers excellent opportunities for theatrical development and, through its double-edged structure, is both comic and deeply moving.
