ASH

Characters
Mr. Adam – approximately 50
Mr. Weiss – approximately 60
Location: Rear building, apartment
ACTION
An unexpected ring at the front door interrupts Adam's work on his laptop. Outside stands Mr. Weiss – an older man who, despite initial refusal, persistently demands entry, soon sits down at the kitchen table, and places an urn in front of him. Inside are the ashes of his recently deceased wife, Claudia.
What begins as a tragic visit from a grieving man quickly escalates into a psychological nightmare: Weiss is absolutely convinced that Adam and Claudia had a passionate, intimate affair. Adam's desperate denials—that he barely knew his neighbor and only exchanged a few words about the weather in the stairwell—fall completely flat on the widower. Weiss isn't seeking confrontation, but rather gratitude, camaraderie, and the shared experience of grief.
A one-act play about the manipulative power of self-deception, leaving the viewer with the question: How do you defend yourself against a reality that someone else has created for you?
“Ashes” was broadcast as a radio play by Polish Radio together with “Steps” under the title “Back House”.
